When choosing a coach, it is important to find the right match for your personality. It is also important to be aware that there are many different types of coaches with different levels and qualities of education or training.
I received my coach training through an ICF certified training program. ICF or the
International Coaching Federation
has established guidelines and ethics. As stated on their website:
“Anyone can call themselves a coach. But ICF-credentialed coaches are professionals who have met
stringent education and experience requirements, and have demonstrated a thorough understanding of
the coaching competencies that set the standard in the profession.
Additionally, they adhere to strict ethical guidelines as part of ICF’s mission
to protect and serve coaching consumers.”
Coaches help people to 1. Clearly visualize the goal and 2. Create the sustainable habits that enable them to reach that goal and others in the figure.
Recent surveys show that 99% of coaching clients are satisfied with their results.
Questions to ask your potential coach
Be sure you engage a fully trained coach. The International Coaching federation (ICF) has established a credentialing and certification process to help consumers make wise decisions in hiring a coach. When you first engage, ask these questions:
Can you clearly articulate your goals?
We all would like to reach our goals. But, can you define exactly what your goals are? Most people cannot. Yet, without a clear picture of what you're working towards, how can you satisfactorily make progress towards it? A coach can help you with this, and help you capture and internalize what enabled you to do so in order for you to know exactly what to do the next time you have an “unreachable” goal.
Choose any goal that is important to you. Answer these questions:
